Using essential oils to nourish your hair is an age-old tradition. Today we find these oils in various shampoos, serums, and hair care products we use but these products can sometimes cause more damage than good since they are loaded with chemicals. But did you know that you can make these essential oils at home without spending a penny and simultaneously avoid the damage through chemicals i.e. killing two birds with a single stone: money and hair damage.
Self-care with essential oils is a hot trend in current times and more and more people are making it a part of their self-care regime. Essential oils are basically distilled from the plant itself and are highly concentrated which makes them a must have in your hair care routine. Every oil has its own advantages and benefits and can be used for various hair care purposes ranging from damaged hair and dandruff to even increase hair growth and shine. Today we will talk about making 4 such essential oil hair care masks at home naturally which you must definitely add to your self-care checklist.
1. FENUGREEK AND CURRY LEAVES OIL FOR VOLUMINOUS HAIR:
Waiting for your hair to thicken and gain volume is like watching paint dry, except with paint it is certain that it will dry up in a few hours. Hair on the flip side can take months or even years to get back to its original volume or length. It is a dream to have the perfect voluminous hair as it makes you feel good but little known is the impact that hair fall, and poor hair quality has on self-care and mental health. Hair fall and thin hair often lower the self-esteem of people, they feel self-conscious looking at others with long and thick hair. Some might even avoid interactions and socializing and resort to hair transplant. But why not try this simple recipe and see the magic for yourselves!
Fenugreek also known as methi contains vitamin db3 which helps in increasing the blood flow to the scalp follicles which in turn results in healthier hair. Fenugreek seeds also have hormones in them which help in hair growth, strengthening your hair from roots and preventing breakages.
Curry leaves are a staple ingredient in Indian households but trust us when we say that they are your ultimate self-care savior. They have so much more to offer than just adding tadka and flavor in your food. They are packed with vitamins A, B, C, E and iron which makes them an excellent antioxidant and helps in preventing hair loss. They help you in getting rid of hair loss and leave your hair lustrous and voluminous. So why not combine all of them and create a quick and natural oil for your much-loved hair.
Ingredients:
a. 2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
b. Handful of curry leaves
c. 2 tablespoon Coconut oil
Method:
Add both the ingredients in a pan and fry them on low medium heat for 2-3 minutes. Grind it into a powder. Add 2 tablespoons of coconut oil to the powder and reheat. Set aside the mixture and allow it to cool for some time. Strain the mixture into a bowl and massage into your scalp with your fingertips. Leave it onto your hair for 1-2 hours and then wash it!

Once a week
2. GINGER JUICE HAIR CARE OIL FOR TACKLING DANDRUFF:
The ‘liquid gold’ hair oil as most people like to call it, ginger with its anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and other healing properties has been well known for over thousands of years. Transforming this pulp into an infused oil is not only easy but also much cheaper than purchasing it from the market.
Ginger juice oil can be added to face and hair masks in your self-care home remedies. Ginger will not only help in restoring your scalp health but also drastically help you fight an itchy scalp and dandruff. Excessive dandruff can lead to a bacterial infection. Living under the constant fear of visible flakes of dandruff on your head or shoulders often leads to anxiety. This results in poor self-care and despite dandruff being a recurring concept to most of us, ginger oil can help you naturally look after this problem. Here’s a one-step method of how you can put them to use to get those gorgeous dandruff free tresses.
Ingredients:
a. Handful of ginger
Method:
Take a handful of ginger. Rinse it with water and chop it into pieces. Grind it into pieces till becomes a paste. Squeeze out the liquid in a container and add a little lavender oil(optional) Apply the oil directly to your scalp. Keep it for 30/40 minutes and then rinse it off with your regular shampoo.
Frequency:
2/3 times a week
3. GHEE AND HONEY HAIR OIL TREATMENT FOR SCALP HYDRATION:
Lack of moisture is one of the major causes of dull, damaged and dry hair. Just like how it is essential to look after our body by drinking liquids to keep it hydrated, it is equally essential to hydrate and nourish your hair. A good self-care guide must include continuous hydration and moisturization of your scalp. Moisturizing your scalp will also help you soothe your nerves and relax after a hectic day. A good and nourished scalp will not only enrich your hair quality but also give you peace of mind and soothe your nervous system. Self-care is a priority and not a luxury and hence it is essential to cultivate these self-care and hair care habits within you.
The healthy and rich fatty acids found in ghee will help you nourish your scalp and hair from within and give it a boost of hydration and strength.
Honey is a part of almost all self-care routines especially skin and hair as it seals the moisture in your hair and helps in conditioning your tresses. This reduces breakage which is often a cause of slow hair growth.
Rosemary (optional) is a natural cleanser and due to its antibacterial quality, it gently cleanses your hair whilst providing relief to dry or flaky scalps.
Ingredients:
a) 2 teaspoons of ghee
b) Rosemary herb (optional)
c) 1 teaspoon honey
Method:
Take 2 teaspoons of ghee and melt it in a pan. Add rosemary herbs and allow it to infuse for 5 mins on a low flame(optional). Add 1 teaspoon of honey to the mixture. Drain this oil into another bowl and allow it to cool for a bit. Apply it all over your scalp for about 30-60 minutes since it is a deep cleansing oil mask. Rinse it off with your normal shampoo and voila! You just upped your self-care goals.
Frequency:
Once a week
4. ONION OIL FOR HAIRFALL:
Hair fall is a serious issue especially with the millennials since they are always on their toes and super stressed about their work and life. Amongst this mess, hair fall has become a critical hair care problem as there is no time to look after your body, mind or soul. Hair fall is one of the major outcomes of poor self-care and highly stressed lives.
Onion is an essential oil which has been used since ages to treat hair fall. It is one of the nuskhaa’s (home remedies) which most Indian families have passed on to their future generations.
Onions have a very high Sulphur quotient. This helps in preventing split ends, reduces hair fall and premature greying. Regular use of onion oil in your hair care routine will ensure a significant growth in your hair. Onion also helps in balancing the pH level of the scalp which helps in improving the blood circulation and thus promote hair growth. Don’t worry we gotchu covered with this simple homemade self-care recipe with onion oil.
Ingredients:
a) 2 onions
b) ½ cup coconut oil
Method:
Chop the onions and add them to a blender with 1 tablespoon coconut oil. Blend it until a smooth paste is formed. Pour the paste into a pan and add 1 cup coconut oil to it. Simmer it on a low flame until the paste turns pinkish brown. After the oil has cooled down, drain it into a bowl and massage it to your scalp. Leave it on for 2/3 hours and then rinse it off with your shampoo.
Frequency:
2/3 times a week
